PIP Fellowship Report

PacINET 2007

Honiara , Solomon Islands

14 th -21 st August 2007

Introduction.

PacINET 2007 is the sixth annual conference of the PICISOC hosting by Solomon Islands from 14 th – 21 st August 2007, with the theme “ National ICT Strategy Building”.

This report is based on what I have learned and how will I share information from the PacINET 2007 Conference and also what ways the PIP program can be improved.

What I have learned from the PacINET 2007 Conference?

The conference covered vast areas of ICT in the Pacific Region and experiences presented from various international organizations from other regions. It created various opportunities to listen and participate in relevant subjects to build my capacity to ameliorate my profession but also to assist and develop relationships with those speakers or presented organizations with my Samoa Information Technology Society and my working organisation Samoa National Provident Fund. I’ve learned that attending to this type of international conference would open great opportunities to participants to network and share ideas with other ICT professionals to improve and solve your current problems. Also, I’ve learned that political leaders should lead the ICT in the market nationally and regionally. That was a very crucial factor brought up by the Solomon Islands Prime Minister at his official opening speech and other speakers of the conference. Additionally, this is a very effective way of learning ICT because the conference consist of various ways of information dissemination that you can choose from which sessions you want to attend. Then from here, you can selectively choose relevant and applicable sessions to your own preferences. Finally, internet issue utilizing IPV6 was one of the most interesting and common subjects presented and discussed during the conference. That was a very crucial technique to be engaged in the Pacific region due to its distance from each pacific island and most of the world.

How will I share information from the PacINET 2007 Conference?

As a Senior IT Officer for the Samoa National Provident Fund, I already submitted a report about the conference and its contents to the management and my staff for their information.

As a member of the Samoa IT Society, I can arrange a brief presentation about this conference during our Annual General Meeting or national annual IT conference.

More over, I can forward all information about this conference to various mailing lists that I subscribed to.

What ways the PIP program can be improved.

This is the first time I have received this fellowship from PIP and it is much appreciated because without your sponsorship I wouldn’t made it to Solomon Islands. Also, my organization doesn’t know about PICISOC. So I have to formally request the organization’s management and board given a brief description of the conference and some financial support from another source such as PIP so that they could fund the remaining expenses. However, PIP should fully funded this program in the future.

Acknowledgement

I have the privileged to sincerely thank the PIP and especially Don Hollander for accepting me in the PIP program and organizing that wonderful lunch we had at Solomon Islands.
